The Stratemeyer Syndicate, a publishing concern that generated several children's fiction series, such as Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and the Bobbsey Twins. Started by Edward Stratemeyer in the 1890s, the series was continued by his daughter Harriet Stratemeyer Adams until her death in 1984, then by partners until the Syndicate was sold to Simon & Schuster in 1984. Mildred Wirt Benson, journalist and author of young adult fiction, is a native of Ladora, Iowa and a 1925 graduate of the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa). She was the first woman to receive a master's from the State University of Iowa's School of Journalism in 1927.
